Has anyone ever used a mechanical pump for water injection?

I have a new project that i'm building a motor for and have the room to run a mechanical pump and it would simplify things like plumbing.

Richard has a lot of experience in this area, but I will try to summarize. A purely mechanical pump will generally hit full pressure right away and act as an on/off system regardless of pump speed. You would need some sort of variable regulator or bypass apparatus, which just gets more complicated.

Many have tried, unless much of the support stuff is in place it's more money and hassle then common options.

Post up what you have in mind, we love to see new stuff and ideas.

Unless you run a regulator, or, like I was considering, using a 3 way solenoid, to bypass when not injecting, and then pulse it when injecting

Did research over the weekend and its proving to be a costly option......

A pump with a built in bypass would be nice but i haven't found that option looking at tpyical fuel system pumps.

My goal is to build a lightweight system as its going on a Lotus seven type vehicle where the engine is exposed (so it has to look good), compact and lightweight.

Basically, all pumps are mechanical in structure. Your question is about how it is driven. Electro-mechanically or mechanically.

You can just buy a pump head from shurflo or aquatec, construct a frame to house a pulley. Couple it to the fan belt. Extremely light weight and not too difficult to do.

Wear will be a problem because it is running constantly when the engine is on.

Brilliant! Why didn't i think of that! I'm going to dismantle the pump i have and see what i can come up with on CAD as a solution. Give me a couple weeks to get this done and i'll report back.
