I found this website. Seems like a good price. You get 5 gallons of it for $45 which includes Hazmat charges. Sunoco Methanol (99.95%)

Also, here is a link for the MSD of Methanol. Figured it would be good to know what you are dealing with:)

Good link James - I just came accross that over the weekend as well and even recall seeing it previously after I went to it - don't know why I forgot about it.

*Overall note - I know this is counter to the non-commercial, no advertising policy. However, this is a warranted exception since in the US methanol is difficult to come by. Also the policy is geared more towards I didn't want a bunch of auto part vendors or vendors' customers pitching and selling their products on this board. Helpful sources for hard to come by items like this are an example of a permitted exception to the policy.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I would be stepping on the rules with that post. I will make sure I do keep it in mind though.

I have never bought from them. I don't even have a WI setup yet. Just very excited about it and trying to learn as much as I can before I do.

Nope this is a good link to have around and a good example of how the policy needs to applied in a way that keeps the site informative for users without being someplace they have to wade through advertising posts to get to good information - thanks for posting it.

Stickied it.

You should be able to beat that price by a bunch by simply looking for local race fuel suppliers that sell fuel grade ethanol or methanol. Here it runs about $2.00 / gal.

Where are you at in Iowa? It's my understanding that Eddyville now sells it. Additionally, I've been told that Strange Perfomance in Des Moines sells it.

Larry, is that fuel grade Methanol you are talking about for $2/gal M1? The price sounds more like M70 where they mix Methanol and unleaded. If so, is M70 or M85 ok to run mixed with water for cooling? The source I found was about $100 for a 15gal drum of M1. -JoeB

The methanol I buy is to the best of my knowledge 100% methanol. It is sold from the drum at a local speed shop for racers that run in race classes which allow methanol fuel. I think the last I bought went for $2.25 / gal.

If it had gasoline in it, I should have seen it settle out when I mix it with water.

If you're not sure, the low tech fuel test to check for alcohol mixed with gasoline is to take an old baby bottle, put about 50 ml water in it, and then add 50 ml of the fuel. Shake for about 15 seconds and then let it stand. If it has gasoline and alcohol mixed, they should separate out into layers.

If its pure alcohol you'll end up with slightly less than 100 ml of mixture and no separation. If it has gasoline in it at say 15% you should end up with about 1.5 ml layer of gasoline.

The best solution is a mixture of 97% methanol and 3% isobuthanol... to keep safe. This mixture smells and you won't never have troubles in any different usage.

More than 10 years ago we were already trying methanol in Italy... but some stupid people used it also mixing it with wine and many people died for that.

BE CAREFUL WITH PURE METHANOL PLEASE!!!!!
