View Full Version : Source of methanol in the UK

I'm looking for a commercially available windscreen mix in the UK that contains methanol.
They've apparently all changed the packaging and contain no information on ingredients. (Bastids  )

Despite the rumours that "Holts" windscreen concentrate does contain methanol, I've just had confirmation from the factory that it DOES NOT.

Apparently methanol-based products have been withdrawn from the market, so if the label doesn't state it explicitly, you have to assume that it hasn't got it.

Please try the following:

Methanol sources:
- Alcohols Ltd on 01279 658464 25L: ?44.00 205L: ?105.14
- Pertolchem on 0208 879 3090
- Cotswold Chemicals 01453 825292 5L: ?7.70 25L: ?26.04 205L: ?61.00

It will be easier if you look in the yellow pages for your local Chemical Dispenser Supplier and you can pick them up. Get a spare container so that you can dilute it before storing it - Dimin water is also very cheap from them - ?5-8 per 25L drum

Model airplanes run on methanol (hint-hint)
I paid about ?6/gallon. Make sure it's pure, and not mixed with oil!

If you use the stock windscreen reservoir, remember that many fumes will enter the cabin. Methanol is toxic, and doesn't smell.
I chickened out and went for 90%water 10%methanol, mainly for antifreeze purposes.

If you use a dedicated tank for the stuff, make sure it's plastic (methanol attacks aluminium)

Try a search on Ebay UK for methanol, there is a guy on there who sells it. I have ordered some outside of Ebay for ?25.85 for 5 gallons. One drum went for ?12.50 on Ebay.

Now the downside, collection only in Manchester.

Has anyone found a supplier in the North West or North Wales for methanol and (maybe) toluene. The seller I found on Ebay seems to not be able to supply methanol now and I want to be able to make some octane booster for cheaper than you can buy off the shelf (methanol cannot be used in high enough concentrations with petrol as fuel additive because it damages the catalysts)

I buy my methanol from a local RC model shop (near Bournemouth), they don't always have it in stock but get it in a day or so. I rang all the local shops until I found one that could supply.

I pay about ?5 a gallon

There is a camping store near Caernarfon which sells pure methanol by the gallon. I'm off there this afternoon so I'll post the phone number for you later on :D

If anybody in Ireland is looking for Methanol or Toluene I buy both from a company in Dublin who deliver it to my work address, I'm not sure if they sell small volumes as I usually chip in with a few friends for a barrel.

DT chemicals 205L drum ends up costing ?165.60 delivered with VAT, but I think this is only if you have a forklift for unloading it as we do, the site is not very clear on this or perhaps I'm just a bit thick, lol.

Cheers!

A big drum is relatively easy to roll if you have a flat surface. As long as the delivery vehicle has a tail lift so you can get the drum on the ground, you shouldnt have any real problems.
