Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
Hi Richard,
Thanks for the wiring diagrams. I'm about to install an HFS-3 on my 2008 STi and I had a doubt regarding the orange cable that goes to section B (B135), MAP SW/Safe Mode (optional fail safe). In the diagram you put it going to two terminals (26 and 27). My question is if this cable needs to be connected to both terminals or just one. My second question was it says on the diagram this failsafe is optional; by that you mean that it can be done as an additional failsafe or that it can be wired in place of the Boost Solenoid. Any advantages to this optional failsafe? Thanks. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
1. Failsafe option #1 (safe mode) ...... section B (135) pin #27:
You only need the orange wire to trigger "safe mode" upon a failsafe activation. 2. Failsafe option #2 (boost cut) ...... section D (137) pin #27: Cut and splice the brown (ECU) and white (BCV) into the wire leading out of the pin#27. Uppn fialsafe activartuibm, boost will drop down to wastegate pressure. You only need one of the above options. I Prefer option #2 because it covers the event of a total power failure conditions. Option #1 will not work if you have a power failure. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
Good Day Richard,
Can you please assist in locating and Ecu Pin-out Diagram for my - 2011 Sti Sedan 5 Speed Automatic South African Spec I have already purchased a HFS2 system from Praga at Frieling Racing and I plan on performing a DIY install. Thanks for your help. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
Hi Can anyone confirm if the 2011 and 2008 STi's share the same ECU pin outs?
|
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
I will find that out for you by tomorrow.
|
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
please tell me which model: sti-wrx. USDM, JDM, EUDM.

Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
Hi Richard,
I drive a 2011 WRX STi 2.5L with 5 speed automatic gearbox. Checked around and confirmed my ECU is the same as Australian Spec vehicles, my car shares the same ECU Id as Australian vehicles. Hope this helps. :) |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
Hi Richard,
Any good news for me ? |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
I can pass on the info to my source and hope they have it.
There is an easier way to do this. Traditionally Subaru's inject lines are coded with a pink trace. If you can take a picture of the side where all the wires come out of the ECU, I may be able to compare it with all my subi files. Subaru does,'t change ECU pin out that often. Richard |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
Will take a pic as soon as I get a chance... thanks.

Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
hello i have the aquamist hfs-2/3 v2 and have a US sti my question is for the green injector (-) wire, does it have to jump all 4 or just one, i see the diagram has the pins that should be used in color, and it seems that all 4 are colored thats my confusion thanks for your help
|
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
You only need to splice into just one fuel injector. It can be anyone of the four. On the wiring diagram we provided here, I picked injector #1.
|
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
I am just about to install a HFS-3 into a Australian 08 STI - would the ECU wiring be the same?
|
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
I am not sure. Is it regarded at JDM?
If all else fails wiring the red and green wire of the grey harness directly to the fuel injectors. Almost 99% of the ECU wiringd to the fuel injectors have a pink trace. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2008)
JDM, no we have the 2.5 the same at the USA. Anyway I check the wiring and they look the same. FYI I have now installed the system and it seems to be working fine as per the manual.

Good to know that.

Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Hi Richard,
I have a 2007 sti usdm and having trouble with the fail safe. I installed the kit and got my car tuned the other day but we didn`t set the fail safe up at that point in time. I wired in the bcv the way you have it shown which is on the ground to the bcv correct? When thats wired up like that and the system and ignition is powered up you should be able to read 12volts across the connector at the bcv shouldn`t you? and in turn you should have continuety through the white and brown wire? So if the system has a fault cut the ground to the bcv = low boost? Could it be that something has failed in the control for the system? Or maybe I don`t have one of the connections inside jumped correctly? I would be very thankfull for some help with this. Didn`t think I would have such a hard time with it. Thanks Scott |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
You only set up the failsafe after you have run the system for a week or two.
First set up the failsafe window: 1. With the engine running 2. Put the intended jet on the screen. 3. Put the "prk" jumper link to "SYS" to activate the system manually. 4. Set the SC trimmer (on gauge) until the gauge displays 6 bars. Put the jumper back to the "prk" slot 5. Set the WL ten clicks from fully counter-clockwse 6.. Set the WH ten clicks from fully clockwse 7. Go for a drive and make sure the failsafe does not trip. 8. If it trips, advance the WL trimmer counter-clockwise a click or two. 9. If it doesn't trip, advance the WL trimmer clockwise a click or two until it does. Then un-advance it a chick of two, That is it. Once this is done, don't alter the threshold or gain on the controller Let me know how you get on up to this point. Brown and white wire: (wire it at the ECU) 10. Key off .......... brown/white wire goes open-circiut 11. Key on ......... brown/white wire goes close-circuit 12. During spray ..... brown/white stays close-circuit 13. Loss of spray ..... brown/white goes open-circuit Wire the brown and white wire exactly as the diagram, cutting the "ground" side of the BCV. Brown goes to the BVC side and white goes to the ECU side. If you don't want CEL after failsafe trigger, link the DR=1 jumper (PAGE 12.6 of the user manual) |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Cheers! I`ll give that a go and let you know how I get on.

Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
I have tried for the third time to wire in this system the way you have said with no joy! Every time I wire it in I get a CEL for boost control soleniod low. I have followed your diagrams and one thing that has me wondering is that the system config on the 2007 has only 14 different options where as my control box has 16? I follow your steps but without fail that solenoid isn`t getting what it needs right from the time I hook up the wires. Even when I wire it up and jump the DR1 I still get the CEL. Any idea on whats my issue?
|
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
High Richard,
I followed the instructions and can`t get the fail safe working. Soon as I wire it in like this I get CEL on and can`t build proper boost. I was on to Cam at light speed inovations where I bought the kit, and he couldn`t help and suggested I try you. Could it be something with the control unit itself? Thanks |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Can you tell me which failsafe option you are using? Map switch or boost cut?
1. If you are using map switch on the test mode connector, make sure you remove the "CLP" jumper. 2. If you are using the brown wire (solenoid side) and white (ECU side) failsafe. Make sure you link "DR1" jumper. You only need to use one or the other, not both. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Hi
I`m only trying to use the boost cut. I tried again tonight wiring it in and linking the DR1 and not the CLP still no go. The CEL comes on just a few seconds after starting the car. All the pins I have linked are IDC PWM FAV DR1 FSO DHB. It doesn`t seem to matter what I do ie turn the gauge on or off the brown and white wire will always stay open and never go to closed circuit. I don`t understand why it isn`t going closed circuit right off the bat and not open until it would detect a fault. And why the CEL when linking DR1. Thanks Scott |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Just another thing to metion testing with a DMM even on the white and black wire turning the gauge on or off I can get it to change from open to closed circuit. Not that I need to use the black but I tested it anyway.

Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Just to confirm, you have connected the white wire to the ECU side and brown to the wastegate solenoid (BCV) side after cutting the ECU cable.
Please disconnect the white and brown wire and check the continuity of the brown and white wire under the following conditions: 1. no power to the system (gauge on or off) ......... open circuit 2. ignition on, gauge off ......... open circuit 3. ignition on, gauge on ...... closed circuit |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Yes I cut the wire and hooked them up that way.
Those other checks I have done and it will not go closed circuit. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Can you check the wire order of the grey harness for me as below:
- Red (from gauge side) - Red - green - orange - white - yellow - blue - black - brown - not used - any colour If the colour order is correct check for RJ plug damage: http://www.aquamist.co.uk/forum/gallery/HFS6/conn1.jpg http://www.aquamist.co.uk/forum/gallery/HFS6/conn2.jpg |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Hi
I just checked this throughly and I wasn`t able to see any kind of corrosion or damage. I also checked the wiring with a magnifiglass the ECU cable grey. RED RED GREEN ORANGE YELLOW WHITE BLUE BLACK BROWN Is this the problem the yellow and white wire back to front? Should I try soldering these wires the other way round? |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Yes, the yellow and white harness is rotated. Please for the time being, use the yellow as white. Pm me your address, I will send you a new grey harness. This is no harm to the system.
I apologise on behalf of the person who inspected the harness. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Did you recieve that Pm message? It doesn`t seem like it sent?
|
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
I got you pm. You can to select the "sent box" option in advanced settings.

Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
2011 USDm sti. For fail safe I connect the brown and white wires to 33 as well as a wire out to the wastegate solenoid?
Where does the wire tap into the wastegate solenoid? Do I have to connect the purple wire for gauge dimming? |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
First you need to cut the wiring from pin33 in two. Connect the white wire to the "one half" from the pin33. Then connect the brown wiring to the other half. If you are not sure what I am trying to say, take a look at the wirng diagram on this thread.
The purple will enable the "dim" trimmer for night driving. It need to be wired to a head lamp (+) side. If you don't mind the gauge led gets too bright at night, leave it unconnected.Tape it up. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
I see. 33 is the wastegate solenoid lead. Much less complicated than I was trying to make it.
|
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
2011 USDm sti
Currently have jumpers at idc, pwm, fav, prk, dr0, clp, fs0, dhb I have wired the system per your diagram on page 1 and get a cel when the system is turned off. Will setting the jumper to dr=1 fix this? If the jumper is at dr=1 will I get a cel if the system goes to fail safe or will it just go to wastegate pressure? When the system is turned off is it possible to run a separate non-water injection tune? |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
DR=1 will fix the cel if the boost is reduced to wastegate pressure.
If you want to run a non-wmi tune, unlink the DHB jumper. This will allow you to run full boost when the system is switched off. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
I assume that means I move the jumper from DR=0 to DR=1? Or do I move it from PRK?
When the DHB jumper is unlinked, is that something I will have to do every time I switch to non wmi? Or do I leave it unlinked and when the system is on it will go to fail safe without it? Do the rest of the jumpers appear to be in the right spaces (idc, pwm, fav, prk, dr0, clp, fs0, dhb)? |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Yes, just move the DRO jumper to DR1.
DHB only affects the guage off mode. When you switch the gauge on again , everything is the same as before. You can always refer to the gold dot on top as factory setting. |
Re: Subaru STi to HFS-3 wiring diagrams (2004-2011)
Quote:
So just to be clear if I remove this jumper I do NOT need to reinstall it for the fail safe to work properly while running wmi. All I would need to do is change the tune depending on if the gauge was on or off. |
