Default could methanol cause engine damage?

Just been reading "Forced induction performance tuning" by A. G. Bell.

He mentions that methanol will leave white deposits on anything aluminium - basically it corrodes the ali, the white deposits are aluminium oxide (I think).

He goes on to say that this can corrode the piston ring lands, the piston rings and bore wall by washing away lubricant.

So my question: does any one have any more info on this? Any real life experience of methanol causing problems?

Cheers
Jez
