Default Hello. L200 owner - planning a kit. Lots to learn.

Hi everyone. I have a 2002 Mitsubishi L200 2.5TD. Around 170Bhp is not too hard to achieve with these trucks, and people commonly do. I'm looking to go a tad further though. Not after monster truck / super car performance. Just hopefully around 200bhp. Not being a performance engine the cooling provided by a water injection system cannot be ignored.

I understand the principles and I have a lot of studying to do. I need to work out if I want to inject a water/meth mix or just water for starters. I like the idea of not having to buy methanol all the time. There is also quite a lot of scope for engine remapping with these trucks provided you can keep things cool enough.

Looking forward to getting involved and hurting my brain in the process

Can I assume your car is a diesel? (...TD).

Can you tell me how the fuel is delivered.

Hi Richard. Yes a diesel. Multi point fuel injection.

Great, makes my life a lot easier.

Question: can the turbo flow enough air for 200bhp? I would like to have a look at the compressor map if it is available.

No idea. I have no issue putting a new turbo on though. I don't have the compressor map available but I can ask on the club forum. If memory serves it max's out at 30psi.

Assuming is can sustain 30psi at a reasonable efficiency, 200bhp is a achievable goal.

As diesel power is directly related to quantity of fuel injected. You can start as follows:
1. Increase fuel flow (just as the black smoke starts)
2. Increase boost until no more black smoke.
3. Repeat 1 amd 2.
4. At all time keeping the EGT in the region of 850C

Fuel can be increase by:
5. Upping the rail pressure (budget tuning device)
6. Increase the "on time" of fuel injection duration. (More advanced tuning device)

There are plenty of scope on 6 if the enigne does not rev too high.

Thanks Richard. What sort of kit are we talking to achieve this? Could you direct me to to a link of suitable aquamist kit?

Also could you point me in the direction of the tuning devices for steps 5 and 6? Assuming you're not talking about ECU remapping? We can get 145 safely with a ECU remap. Guys then run s/s exhaust, bigger IC, induction kit and blanked EGR.

In my case I have blanked EGR, induction kit, port matched head and uprated flow matched injectors. My rough plan was to do s/s exhaust and front mount IC. Fit water injection with temp sensors for EGT's and wind up boost (possibly new turbo) and a more aggressive ECU remap to bring enough fuel in. Thoughts on this? These "tuning devices"? Is this a different route?

Also trying to work out if I can run water without meth or if I need the meth?

We don't make diesel tuner boxes. I suggest research it first before adding water injection. You mentioned something about ECU remapping. If you can do remapping, then adding water injection is the next stage.

Yep there's lots of scope for ECU remaps. Good specialist tuners will stop at 145 so as to keep the engine safe. But I've been told by several of them that much more power is available if the engine can be kept cool enough.
