Water injection mixture notations

In the current thread on using advanced injection mixtures like mixes of RC nitromethane fuels in water injection systems it occurs to me that it would be very useful to set up a "standard notation" for the purposes of clear discussion and simple communications.

During WWII 2 they refered to a 50% water methanol mix as MW50.
In the fuels area they use a standardized notation for gasoline alcohol mixes, were and 85% mix of ethanol with gasoline is called E85, and a similar 85% mix of Methanol would be noted as M85.

I suggest we consider a similar notation system that is completely unambigous as some of the board members toy with complex mixtures.

For example the Buick GN guys frequently use a mix of straight 90% isopropyl alcohol and water.

Here's my idea for discussion

A standard notation of ADi mixes;


In the discussion explicitly express the notation sequence using the first letters of the components such as a 30% water, 50% methanol, 20% ethanol mix would be:

W/M/E = 30/50/20

To make the numbering convention universal, the rule could be ;

Water % is always the first number

Alcohols always follow the water stated in order of their molecular weight.
Ie Methanol first , ethanol second, Isopropyl third

Nitro (or any oxygen carrier) is always last if used --- and the true nitro percentage is always to be enclosed in ( )

That would make the notation for a 34% water, 66% RC fuel mix composed of 15% nitro mixed with methanol, would appear as:

34/56/(10) { edit to fix stupid math error }

A standard 50% water 50% methanol mix would show as:
50/50 or MW50

A mix of 50% water 30% methanol and 20% ethanol would appear as:
50/30/20 or MEW30/20

A straight rubbing alcohol injection mix of 90% isopropyl alcohol would be:
either 10/0/0/90 or IW 90


A straight 15% nitro RC fuel mix would be:
0/85/(15)

I have run into several papers that I had to spend a considerable amount of time re-reading them to figure out for sure which water/alcohol mix was being used.

Just a thought for use in more advanced discussions where multiple mixtures are being discussed, or compared.

Great idea! larry. The mixture used is getting more and more complex.

Could this be a typo as it doesn;t make sense to me immediately:

A mix of 50% water 30% methanol and 20% ethanol would appear as:
50/30/20 or MEW30/20
