Default inconsistent flow meter readings

Install info:
-0.5mm restrictor and 0.8mm jet
-IDC trigger on 2009 wrx

with SC set to highest (CW), flow meter would mostly light up to 4 bars under full boost but sometime would go 7 or 8 bars, tripping the failsafe.

Also, does the "B" light always turns off after each time the IDC falls below the trigger point? My HFS-5 setup keeps the "B" lit after the first "use".

Where are you located?

Two possibilities for the abrupt flow:

1. Air in the line and pump.
2. Leaky y-piece (put a small plastic bag around the y-piece abd see if it collects some fluid.

There is something strange about the SC setting. It rarely needs to maximum. The B light should go off if the iDC is below the trip point. Unless the "WL" is set too low.

Hi Richard
I am in Alberta, Canada. Customer is in a different city. I'll have to look in the manual to see what this y-piece is.

Customer had spoken with Jeff Howerton and was told that it has something to do with the electronics not scaling well at relatively low flow rates and that there is a fix that requires a modification of some sort in the controller board.

More questions regarding the "B" light. This is a HFS-3 installation? Is the system triggered by PWM or MPS?

Richard

it is a HFS-3 installation with PWM trigger. Customer has also reported that the amber water level/fault light is coming on when he hits boost (forces low boost operation) and then it goes away and boost returns. Water level is full when that happens.

To eliminate the posibility of the gauge yellow led trigger by the level sensor, can you disconnect it for the time being and see the yellow led still triggers.

If the led still triggers intermittently, purge the system to ensure thereare no air trapped in the pump head.

OK, in this case, the amber led is triggered by a true failsafe.

Questions to help me:
1. Can you describe the SC, WL and WL setting (face of a clock).
2. What jet size and jets
3. At what IDC% is the threshold trimmer (face of clock)
4. How many bars is the guage showing at WOT, at full boost.
5. What car is the system on?

I am the customer, and can answer these questions...

1. Settings on the gauge: SC ~ 3 o'clock / WL ~ 8 o'clock / WH ~ 1 o'clock

2. 0.8mm jet, 0.5mm restrictor pill
3. Threshold: ~ 10 o'clock

4. At WOT, gauge usually shows3 bars, sometimes flickers to 4
5. Vehicle is 2009 WRX with VF52, stock injectors, Perrin CAI, turbo inlet, AVO TMIC, Perrin EL headers, 3" TBE exhaust - with high flow cats, EBCS

I think I know what may have caused this fluctuation.

The HFS-3 flow meter and FAV is mapped to accommodate up to 3x 1mm jet. When you are running only one 0.8mm jet + 0.5mm restrictor, the flow signal is amplified, as seen on the SC setting. Becuase of this the resolution/smoothness of the flow signal is decreased.

I can reflash in another flow sensor map for you so that you can get full resolution. For this to happen, you need to return the controller board back to us, service is free. Before making this decision, are you going to continue to run this system at such a low flow in the future?

Try increase the failsafe delay trimmer (clockwise), this may solve your failasfe problem due to over shoot of the flow signal.

Jeff also told me this and am planning to do the reflash. I will see him in about 2 weeks as I am travelling to his area. The original jet restrictor choice was 8mm jet and 7mm restrictor based on 50/50 mix and stock injectors at 565cc, and approx 20PSI boost. Sunny (Airboy) and I were have some difficulty tuning the system originally so we tried the 5mm pill and it made it a bit better. I'd like to go back to the 7mm pill and get it set up properly, so we'll work towards this.
