40A power relay |

It is absolutely essential to use a power relay when a new equipment is added to a cars electrical supply, especially when high current is drawn.
The relay above has a 12V coil and can switch up to 40Amp, coil resistance is 90 ohms. All Aquamist water injection systems are supplied with this relay and the "race" pump has a peak current demand of 28A (1ms); using a relay is essential. A few tips worth noting: Switching a relay coil produces "back EMF", commonly known as arcing. This effect can erode the delicate contacts very quickly and destory them in a matter of days rather than months. One easy way of overcoming this is to add a semiconductor diode across the coil, a general purpose diode similar to 1N4001 (1A @50v) will be sufficient, watch out for the diode polarity.
