Does anyone know what are high but safe inlet temps for regular unleaded (UK) and Klotz 118 fuel.

I have experienced in the past that when charge temperature exceed 100C on a tuned/modified engine, it induces detonation. The safe way to tackle this by putting a fast response charge temperature sensor along the inlet track to active a timigmn retard or spray more water. It is a very complex question to answer accurately.

Yes I would second Richards comments. The answer to that question depends on several unknowable variables. What specific engine you run (not all engines of the same design have the same octane needs), what ignition timing, and fuel air ratio you are running, what gearing and weight you are pulling, coolant temperature, and your driving style to mention a few.
I also would recommend you stay below about 150 deg F ( 65 deg C). On my car sensitivity to detonation goes up quickly once intake air temps get above 135 Deg F on 100 octane Sunoco unleaded. The only way to know for sure would be to put some of that fuel in and cut it with a couple gallons of lower octane fuel, and run some tests. When you begin to see trace signs of detonation on the plugs with that degraded fuel you could use that as a reference point for a safe upper limit for "your car" on uncontaminated Klotz 118. Keep in mind that limit could change over time due to other variables like outside humidity, those mentioned above, changes in oil consumption of the engine with age etc. Larry |

Thanks for your answers guys, I now see it's a far deeper question than I'd first thought :?
My friend on a turbo ZX12R recorded inlet temps upto 135deg via his Motec whilst doing fliers on a warm day. But I will check if it was deg C or F :lol: |

Mikes ZX12 turbo had inlet temps of 80deg C in the 1/4's and upto 137deg C in fliers. His SYSTEM 1s was NOT running at the time
![]() His turbo is direct route to plenum ie. no intercooler :shock: He did 3 fliers back to back and 137 was the highest recorded temp. |

I wouldn't recommend running pump fuel at those temperatures.
Detonation is less likely to happen on mhose high RPMs but if it happens, the pistions will melt within a few seconds. Do what you can to prevent it.
